Surface Markers

These surface markers stay on the surface while you're diving. They are used to alert anyone on the surface that there are divers below. Most incorporate a Dive Flag.

These surface markers are different from Delayed Surface Marker Buoys that can be deployed from underwater.

Depth: 1 m (3.28 ft) to 6 m (20 ft)

Level: Open Water and beyond.

Picnic Bay, South is suitable for both snorkelling and scuba diving from the shore or boat. Picnic Bay lies between the small Picnic Point to the north, and Leonard Point to the south, in the Wilsons Promontory Marine Park.

The Picnic Bay, South site lies at the southern end of 500 metre long Picnic Bay Beach, on the northern side of Leonard Point. From the southern end of Picnic Bay Beach you head around the rocks towards Leonard Point. It has boulders sloping down to a sandy bottom at a depth of 6 metres about 150 metres out from the beach.

Location: Wilsons Promontory, Victoria 3960

Parking: There is a parking for cars at the end of Picnic Bay Carpark Road, off Wilsons Promontory Road (C444). There are also public toilet facilities here. Follow the track from Picnic Bay Carpark about 320 metres onto the picturesque Picnic Bay Beach.

Entry/Exit: From Picnic Bay Beach.

Ideal Conditions: Picnic Bay Beach faces west and is sheltered toward its southern end by Leonard Point. Best dived with a light offshore easterly wind and calm seas with no swell. See WillyWeather (Picnic Bay) as a guide for the tide times and the height of the tide.

This truly ancient Country includes parts of Port Phillip, from the Werribee River in the north-west, down to Wilson's Promontory in the south-east, including the Mornington Peninsula, French Island and Phillip Island, plus Western Port. We wish to acknowledge the Boon Wurrung as Traditional Owners. We pay respect to their Ancestors and their Elders, past, present and emerging. We acknowledge Bunjil the Creator Spirit of this beautiful land, who travels as an eagle, and Waarn, who protects the waterways and travels as a crow, and thank them for continuing to watch over this Country today and beyond.
