The Apeks MTX-R First and Second Stage Regulator Set plus Octopus is based on the MTX military regulator and is a super tough, rugged, high performance, go anywhere regulator. The MTX-R has excellent cold-water performance and has a greatly reduced risk of free flow. This has been achieved by improving several areas, including an innovative endcap solution that solves a long-challenged reality for cold-water divers of first stage freeze up.

Suitable for Extreme Cold Water Use

This regulator is designed to meet all aspects of the NEDU (Navy Experimental Dive Unit) military requirements for diving in very cold water. The Apeks MTX-R is highly reliable and very easy to service out in the field. Unique over-balanced diaphragm design as the diver descends, the over-balancing feature allows the medium pressure gas in the hose to increase at a faster rate than ambient. This results in superior performance at depth.

Compact environmentally dry sealed diaphragm system completely eliminating the maintenance issues associated with silicone, oil or grease filling. Breakthrough, innovative over-moulded first-stage endcap and environmental diaphragm helps prevent ice build-up that can cause first stage free flow in extreme circumstances. Also, protects the first stage from impact damage. Easy to grip DIN hand-wheel, only requires one hand to release. 5 x 3/8" UNF (Unified National Fine) medium pressure ports and 2 x 7/16" UNF high-pressure ports. The 5th 3/8" UNF medium pressure port includes a protective bumper when not in use.

Forged first stage body with heat exchanging ribs for maximum thermal performance. Angled HP ports for optimal hose routing and fitting of transmitters.Forged rotating turret with medium pressure ports in a parallel direction for improved hose orientation. Ribbed diaphragm clamp for improved heat exchange in cold water conditions.

The Apeks MTK second stage regulator has been attached to a double swivel hose for greater freedom of movement and comfort. Rig is Nitrox/Oxygen compatible up to 40% O2. Simple to use with no dive adjustment controls and reduced chance of free flow occurrence, pre-settable cracking effort or venturi control by an Apeks approved qualified technician. High performance pneumatically balanced lever operated poppet valve, with large, diver friendly self-flushing controllable purge button and front cover with over-moulded elastomer incorporates a formed chrome plated brass plate which improves the durability of the second stage.

Large protective elastomer bumpers on the side and on the top to protect the second stage from impacts and scratches in the most vulnerable places. A reversible second stage for either a left or right-hand gas supply configuration. A heat exchanger (patented) which surrounds the valve mechanism, dissipates the cold caused by gas expansion while drawing in the warmth of the ambient water. Removable bungee necklace with a lockout feature for retaining the second stage in the mouth of an unconscious diver during rescue and to assist with jaw fatigue.

Features an innovative diver changeable exhaust system (DCE). The system gives the diver the ability to change from a small exhaust tee to a large exhaust tee. The regulator is supplied with both sets of exhaust tees.

The Apeks MTX-R 2nd Stage Regulator comes standard with a Comfo-Bite mouthpiece, and a flexible nylon braided hose has better cold water performance than traditional rubber hose. Simple service kit makes it easy to service.

The Apeks MTX-R Octopus 2nd Stage Regulator has a high visibility yellow front cover, yellow accent pieces and a 91.44 cm (36 inch) braided flex yellow hose and small exhaust tee.

DIN regulator weighs 1,193 g (2.63 lb), Yoke regulator weighs 1,339 g (2.95 lb), and comes with an owner's manual.

What We Think...

MTX was initially born from a brief to produce a regulator that would pass the Navy Experimental Diving Unit test (NEDU) which is a ripper test for regulators where they must perform in 0.3 deg C of water at 60 metres with a massive flow rate. As part of this project, the MTX-R was released to the market and Apeks now have two regulators in the range, the MTX-R and the MTX-RC.

M stands for 'military', the 'TX' part of the regs, means 'tec extreme', and the 'R' stands for 'recreational'. The 'C' on MTX-RC stands for 'control' which in this case means a venturi switch and breathing control.

Which one should you go for then? Well the MTX-R is essentially the brute of the range, technician set not to free-flow, it has heat sinks pretty much everywhere and a recessed purge button reducing the chance of accidentally knocking it open. This is the reg that will withstand anything you throw at it. As a result, it's popular with tec divers, particularly sidemount divers, some of whom like the lack of twiddly knobs when switching regulators. If you're going to be doing lots of cold-water diving or just like the idea of indestructible then the MTX-R is for you.
